You Are Capable
You Are Capable
ca·pa·ble | ˈkāpəb(ə)l | adjective (capable of doing something) having the ability, fitness, or quality necessary to do or achieve a specified thing.
Recently, I found myself drowning in the fear of the unknown. Questions of what 2021 could bring were looming in my head. I began to wonder if we were simply fortunate in 2020, but perhaps, we would experience the aftermath in 2021.
As I allowed my mind to run away with uncertainty, I voiced my fears to a mentor and she responded with something profound...
“When thoughts of fear come up, stop them immediately and take back the control of your mind by proclaiming this truth: Whatever 2021 will bring, I am capable.”
I’ve been pondering what “word” to live by in 2021 over the past few weeks as friends and colleagues post about their “word of the year,” new declarations, and yearly goals. For me, nothing spectacular was coming to mind until I was reminded of what my mentor said about fear while shopping with a friend at The Magnolia (a must-go if you are ever in Waco, TX!). I stumbled upon a small, white frame tucked away in the Christmas clearance section with beautiful black calligraphy that read, “You are capable.”
I am an event planner by occupation (and a perfectionist at heart), so on the days (and in the seasons) when my life does not go according to plan – when relationships are stripped away, when work seems to be going in a new direction, or when challenges rise – it can be easy to run to the fear of the unknown. It’s almost natural to allow my mind to wander away with the worst case scenario, worry about every failure that could possibly happen, and then to allow fear to take the driver’s seat in my mind (while my sanity is stuffed in the trunk).
Studies show that the human mind produces nearly 70,000 thoughts per day (and many claim the number is even higher than this). As I ponder the thoughts running through my mind, I wonder how many are based in fear rather than love. The truth is, I have the choice to captivate each thought, to bring it into the light of truth, and to remind myself that I am capable.
You are capable.
We are capable.
No matter what life (or 2021) brings our way, we are capable of overcoming it.
It takes 21 days to break a mental habit, so in honor of the NEW YEAR (and my birthday month!) I wanted to invite you to join me on a 21-day “I Am Capable” journey. To CELEBRATE, I’m giving away an “I Am Capable” gift basket filled with a few of my favorite things: a $50 Starbucks gift card (because sometimes all you need is a little caffeine to get through the day), a bottle of champagne (as a reminder to celebrate the small victories), a LuluLemon water bottle (to stay hydrated and healthy), a journal (to inspire daily writing and dreaming), and a book I’m currently reading called, “The Best Yes” by Lysa TerKeurst.

This year, I want us to remember that we are capable of redirecting our thoughts and training our minds to rise above the fear of the unknown and to live from a place where we believe we are capable.
I bought that small, beautiful frame from The Magnolia while I was shopping that day, and I hung it on my wall as a reminder to myself that I am capable of anything that comes my way.
(And so are you.)
#Cheers to a beautiful New Year and all the good it will bring our way!
